Interview with Huntir Bass

By: Aglaia M, Junior Giraffe Club member

In January, Huntir Bass spoke to the Junior Giraffe Club about her research at the University of Central Florida combining her two loves - math and giraffes. Afterwards, JGC member Aglaia interviewed Huntir to find out a little bit more about her - her role models, her research and her words of inspiration.

1. How did your love of giraffes start?

I have always been infatuated with giraffes. Any opportunity that will let me see, feed, or pet giraffes, I would immediately go, so I have been to a lot of zoos and wildlife conservation sites.

2.Who is your role model?

My parents are my biggest role models. They have always pushed me to be my best self no matter the obstacles in the way. They have always told me to work hard and pursue any dream I have no matter how big they are.

3.How did you bring together your love for giraffes and mathematics?

I discovered at an early age that I had a passion for both giraffes and mathematics. Once I got to graduate school at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA, I realized I could combine my passions through mathematical modeling. This field of math explores the real world through the logical lens that math holds. From combining my passions, I was able to receive my Masters of Science in Mathematics.

4.What’s something that surprised you when researching giraffe population dynamics?

I was shocked to learn that giraffes are undergoing a silent extinction. Their populations are down 40% due to habitat loss, civil unrest, and poaching for the international trade in bone carvings, skins, and trophies. It breaks my heart knowing this, but what makes the situation worse is not many people know this is occurring. Thus, it is our job as giraffe lovers to make it known and help any way possible with conservation.

5.What advice do you have for others who are interested in math but find it challenging?

Math is like any other skill such as playing a sport, learning a musical instrument, or cooking. The more you practice, the better you become. The best thing one can do is not give up. Each step is an increase forward, regardless of how small it is. Hard work can beat talent, so, no matter what, always try your best.

What are some words of inspiration you would give to young people who are interested in giraffes and giraffe conservation?

There are a few things anyone can do regardless of age and experience. Get involved with organizations like this one. Follow any passions you may have such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), art, music, traveling, reading, etc. Ask questions such as how we can help these magnificent creatures. Bring awareness to giraffe conservation through  school projects, fundraisers, etc. Most importantly, always keep exploring because you never know where you will end up!
